What is Magbodo- Don't get Zero

Magbodo is an integrated solution to learning that infuses a sense of gaming which offers fun, collaboration, competition and promotes creativity that is geared towards improving students’ academic performance. This product is open source that is, having no geographical/school/ social status boundaries; it can be used by any student anywhere provided they have a phone or device that can browse the internet.

The concept behind this product is to present computer based test (CBT) for students seeking admission into higher institutions in a gaming environment. Students’ takes test and compare their result against other students and friends. Base on their performance they are ranked on the platform. Their performance is directly proportional to the results they will get when they take the actual exam since the past questions from such exams, as well as mentally challenging exercises that improve their cognitive abilities are incorporated into the “Game.”

With Magbodo, limitless learning is possible which is tempered by user. Using the platform is absolutely ‘free’ and users have freedom to unlimited questions per month. No monitoring of student performance by parents/teachers/schools. Student monitors and seeks to improve their brain power or academic performance as they compete for rewards such as ranking, badges, trophies and to participate in academic championship at end of each season.

It is design solely with gaming in mind so that students “forget” they are learning when they interact with the product. The less you study or understand your course of study the more your ranking drops as you take exams and game on Magbodo. This will definitely force students to take studies seriously if they don’t want to drop in ranking and look bad before their friends.

Product will be officially available by January 2015

Education sector close to doom.

“Like every other institution in the country (Nigeria) facing its worst moment, it seems that the education sector has not been spared. Out of 1,692,435,000 candidates that sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, only 31.2 per cent managed to obtain a credit pass in five subjects, including Mathematics and English.
In 2013, only 36.57 per cent of the candidates managed to cross the bar, a further dip compared to 2012 that had 38.81 per cent of students passing the exam using similar yardstick. If this downward spiral continues the days ahead may spell doom for the education sector. “(http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/dont-cry-for-me-waec/, 2014)

Furthermore, since the inception of Information technology communication (ITC), young learners’ attentions have been drawn to its possibilities which have strangely complicated things in education sector. Other sectors of the economy have harness its full potential, education sector is yet to do so. Stakeholders came up with several methods to harness ITC to improve and manage Nigeria education but the desired results are yet to be seen. The major challenge with their approach is that stakeholders focus on just one or two basic traditional element of learning which eventually led to policies failures.

We need to change our approach to the crises in our education system by harnessing all the element of traditional learning system into ICT. The basic element of class room setting are; communication, collaboration and competition among students. We believe that if learning could be made more interesting and fun filled students will learn better..

Falling standard of UTME 2014 results

Nigeria is battling with mass failure and poor academic performance especially from secondary school students who participate in WAEC and UTME. Quoting Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, Registrar of JAMB, 1,015,504 candidates registered for University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) 2014 with only 47 candidates scored 250 points and above while 108,488 candidates scored between 200 to 249 points out of total score of 400 points”( www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_Admissions_and_Matriculation_board, 2014). This poor performance is unacceptable which in the long run affects National productivity. The current education system approach has proven faulty in resolving this issue over the years.

It also no gain saying that young Nigerians attention has drifted towards other things apart from academics. Being studious in academic is no longer fashionable, student just find various wrong means to pass without interest in understanding the course of study. These trends have been enforced over the years with the advent of electronic media and internet which gives unlimited access to pure entertainments, sports and lots more. The traditional means of learning in a rigid classroom is now boring and no longer effective to student that has already been over-exposed to fun and entertainment. This is a new challenge definitely needs a new approach to make learning more effective.
